‘Outrageous’: Cuban-Americans Voice Anger After Daughter of Cuban President Is Granted a U.S. Visa

[caption id="attachment_316232" align="alignleft" width="254" caption="Mariela Castro, daughter of Cuba's President Raul Castro, holds a sign demanding President Barack Obama release five Cuban intelligence agents imprisoned in U.S., popularly known as the "Cuban Five." (AP Photo/Javier Galeano)"][/caption] Mariela Castro, 50, is a gay rights advocate. Coincidentally, she's also the daughter of Cuban President Raul Castro. The first daughter raised some eyebrows today after news broke that she is being granted a U.S. visa to attend an academic conference in San Francisco, California. The outspoken advocate is, of course, the niece of former president Fidel Castro -- a factor that is creating a bit of angst among Cuban-Americans who stand opposed to her family's rule. Mariela received a visa from the U.S. State Department and will chair a panel on the politics of sexual diversity at a gathering in San Francisco next week organized by the Latin American Studies Association, an official at her institute told The Associated Press. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to discuss the matter. The Web site of the New York Public Library says Castro is also scheduled to talk there on May 29. The U.S. State Department declined to comment, saying rules prohibit discussion of individual visa applications. A diplomat at the U.S. Interests Section in Cuba also had no comment. Reaction among the Cuban-American community to the news has been strong. Sen. Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, derided the government's choice to allow Mariela into the U.S. He characterized her as someone who opposes democracy and advocates for Cuba's repressive regime. Menendez isn't alone. Other prominent Cuban-Americans agree with his stance. In a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and David Rivera (all from Florida) and Albio Sires (New Jersey) called the decision "appalling." "The administration’s appalling decision to allow regime agents into the U.S. directly contradicts Congressional intent and longstanding U.S. foreign policy," they wrote. "While the Cuban people struggle for freedom against increasing brutality at the hands of Castro’s thugs, the Obama administration is greeting high-level agents of that murderous dictatorship with open arms." Florida Sen. Marco Rubio ethoed this sentiment in a video released earlier today, calling it "shameful" that the Obama administration would grant Mariela a visa. "I think the U.S. government’s decision to grant the daughter of Raul Castro a visa to come to the United States and spread the propaganda of her father’s regime is outrageous and an enormous mistake," Rubio said. "Not only that, it sends a terrible message to the democratic movement in Cuba, to those brave people in Cuba who every single day resist and speak out against the tyranny of the Castro brothers." Watch his commentary, below:

It will not be Mariela Castro's first visit to the United States. She was granted a visa to attend an event in Los Angeles in 2002, during the administration of Republican President George W. Bush, and also made stops in Virginia and Washington. Analysts noted that prominent Americans have also been frequent visitors to Cuba. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter came last March, and a bi-partisan delegation led by U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, was here in February, meeting with President Castro as well as an imprisoned American subcontractor. Carmelo Mesa-Lago, the dean of Cuba economy-watchers and an expert at the University of Pittsburgh, said Cuba has long had a large presence at the LASA conference, without sparking much protest. "Academic exchanges like these are not new, but what's different in this case is who she is," he said. The LASA International Congress, which includes hundreds of sessions on academic topics, takes place May 23-26 in San Francisco, a city closely associated with the history of the gay rights movement. Cuba's state-run press said Castro will be one of 40 Cuban experts in attendance. According to the website of the New York Public Library, Castro is also to take part in a May 29 talk with Rea Carey, director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, about international gay rights, as well as sexual identity and orientation in Cuba. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Billionaire Repudiates Campaign Plan to Use Rev. Wright Sermons Against ‘Metrosexual’ Obama

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (The Blaze/AP) -- The billionaire said to be weighing a proposal to resurrect incendiary comments by President Barack Obama's former pastor shelved the idea Thursday after Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney denounced the tactic. [caption id="attachment_316289" align="aligncenter" width="530" caption="A screen shot from the "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama" plan"][/caption] An aide to Joe Ricketts, founder of TD Ameritrade, said the proposal to draw the Rev. Jeremiah Wright into the presidential campaign -- and the issue of race, by extension -- went too far. (Related: ‘Church Was Not Their Thing’: New Audio From Rev. Wright’s Shocking Interview With Obama Book Author Ed Klein) The New York Times reported Thursday that Ricketts' Ending Spending Action Fund, a conservative super PAC, was considering a proposal for a $10 million TV ad campaign highlighting Wright's sermons. The original Times report read, in part:

Timed to upend the Democratic National Convention in September, the plan would “do exactly what John McCain would not let us do,” the strategists wrote. The plan, which is awaiting approval, calls for running commercials linking Mr. Obama to incendiary comments by his former spiritual adviser, the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr., whose race-related sermons made him a highly charged figure in the 2008 campaign. “The world is about to see Jeremiah Wright and understand his influence on Barack Obama for the first time in a big, attention-arresting way,” says the proposal, which was overseen by Fred Davis and commissioned by Joe Ricketts, the founder of the brokerage firm TD Ameritrade. Mr. Ricketts is increasingly putting his fortune to work in conservative politics.
[caption id="attachment_316256" align="aligncenter" width="545" caption="A screen shot from the "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama" plan"][/caption] The blueprint, titled "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama: the Ricketts Plan to End His Spending For Good," was devised by a group of Republican strategists, one of whom confirmed its contents for The Associated Press on condition of anonymity to discuss private working sessions. The document also suggested hiring a spokesperson who is an “extremely literate conservative African-American” who would be able to argue that Obama presented himself as a "metrosexual, black Abe Lincoln," The New York Times reports. BuzzFeed decided to have a little PhotoShop fun to showcase what, exactly, a metrosexual Lincoln would look like: Brian Baker, president of the super PAC, said Ricketts was not the author of the 54-page plan (see it here). Baker blamed consultants. "Not only was this plan merely a proposal -- one of several submitted to the Ending Spending Action Fund by third-party vendors -- but it reflects an approach to politics that Mr. Ricketts rejects and it was never a plan to be accepted but only a suggestion for a direction to take," Baker said in a written statement. [caption id="attachment_316255" align="aligncenter" width="620" caption="A screen shot from the "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama" plan"][/caption] Romney had urged the independent group, which favors his candidacy, to abandon the Wright strategy and to focus instead on his bedrock issue, the economy. "I repudiate the effort by that PAC to promote an ad strategy of the nature they've described," Romney told the conservative website Townhall.com. "I would like to see this campaign focus on the economy, on getting people back to work, on seeing rising incomes and growing prosperity - particularly for those in the middle class of America." Listen to Romney's statement, below:

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina criticized the plan as a "campaign of character assassination" and accused Romney "reacting tepidly in a moment that required moral leadership in standing up to the very extreme wing of his own party." Messina noted that Republican Sen. John McCain, Obama's opponent in the 2008 presidential race, had rejected using Wright and Wright's sermons against Obama. Messina commented before Romney's interview with Townhall.com, and issued no comment after Romney urged Ricketts' group to abandon the effort. McCain made clear four years ago that he wanted to challenge Obama on his record, not on the words or deeds of those around him, and forbade adviser Fred Davis from incorporating Wright into their advertising plans. [caption id="attachment_316253" align="aligncenter" width="618" caption="A screen shot from the "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama" plan"][/caption] But Davis, a colorful Hollywood consultant, clearly wanted another chance to go use the strategy against Obama. Davis' firm said in a statement Thursday that the document -- which called for "hitting Barack right between the eyes" -- was only a proposal and did not win Ricketts' approval. Wright became a problem for Obama during the 2008 presidential campaign when videos of the pastor's sermons surfaced. In a 2003 sermon, Wright said black people should condemn the United States. [caption id="attachment_316252" align="aligncenter" width="618" caption="A screen shot from the "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama" plan"][/caption] "The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing `God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," Wright said at the time. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme." Wright, who preached at the Chicago church Obama once attended, became such a distraction for Obama that he ended up delivering a major speech on race relations to try to quell the controversy. He also severed his ties to Wright.

For his part, Arizona Sen. McCain said he had no regrets over his handling of the Wright issue. "I remain proud of our campaign and proud of what we were able to accomplish, and I would do it over again," McCain told reporters Thursday at the Capitol. He said the matter seemed dead after Romney repudiated the proposal. [caption id="attachment_316254" align="aligncenter" width="620" caption="A screen shot from the "The Defeat of Barack Hussein Obama" plan"][/caption] He shrugged when asked whether independent groups should take up matters such as Wright's remarks. "It's a way for political operatives to continue to make money," McCain said. Another top Republican, House Speaker John Boehner, of Ohio, declined to be drawn into the debate. "This election is going to be about the economy," he said when reporters asked him to react to the proposed ad campaign. "I don't know what these other people do or why they do it." Ricketts is the founder of Nebraska-based TD Ameritrade Securities and owner of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. He has been active in conservative politics for years, most recently in Republican Deb Fischer's upset win this week in the Republican Senate primary in Nebraska.

‘Native American’ Elizabeth Warren Contributed Recipes to The ‘Pow Wow Chow’ Cookbook

Yesterday's Blaze report on Massachusetts senatorial candidate Elizabeth Warren revealed two thing: a) her claim to Cherokee Indian heritage was touted by more that just Harvard Law School and b) she and her campaign staff have done a pretty dreadful job of handling the public’s (understandably) negative reaction to her failure to produce proof of ancestry. And it looks like one of the pieces of evidence she provided as proof of her Native American heritage (an obscure 1984 cookbook, “Pow Wow Chow,” written by her cousin Candy Rowsey) is going to be another headache for her PR staff.

“Elizabeth Warren was touting her claim of Cherokee heritage as early as 1984, according to a cookbook titled ‘Pow Wow Chow,’” the Boston Herald’s Hillary Chabot reports. In the cookbook, the senatorial candidate is identified as “Elizabeth Warren, Cherokee.” In fact, her Cherokee title can be seen next to the five recipes she contributed. But what’s particularly interesting is that although Warren has the title of Cherokee, she isn’t identified as an official member of the Cherokee tribe in the cookbook. “News of Warren’s Cherokee recipes comes as outraged members of the tribe — including a Warren supporter — demanded she release her employment records following reports that she has no documentation to prove her Native American ancestry,” Chabot reports.

“If I were her I would release those employment documents,” said Steve Russell, an enrolled Cherokee, “I guess she thinks because she doesn’t have to release them then no one will care, but I guarantee you Indians care, and I care.” Twila Barnes, a Cherokee genealogist, was a little more straightforward: “She needs to admit the truth. There is no documentation showing that she has Cherokee ancestry. She needs to come clean and release her employment records.” Needless to say, if it’s shown that Warren only claimed she was Cherokee Indian to help launch her prestigious careers at top tier universities, it will reflect very poorly on said universities. Perhaps realizing this, Harvard Law professor Charles Fried, the man who recruited Warren, has rushed to her defense.

“In spite of conclusive evidence to the contrary, the story continues to circulate that Elizabeth Warren enjoyed some kind of affirmative action leg-up in her hiring as a full professor by the Harvard Law School. The innuendo is false,” Fried said in a statement yesterday. “I can state categorically that the subject of her Native American ancestry never once was mentioned." William A. Jacobson of Legal Insurrection offers a little perspective (just in case you think this whole thing is just too silly):
In isolation this story is a little silly, except that it’s not in isolation. Warren was touted as Native American at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard, listed herself that way in law association forms in the mid-1980s through mid-1990s, and touted herself in a cookbook as Cherokee. Yet there is no evidence that she is Cherokee, and all the evidence is to the contrary.

Chicago Beginning to Looking More Like Fort Knox Leading up to NATO Summit

View more videos at: http://nbcchicago.com.

Earlier in the week, The Blaze reported on how the upcoming NATO Summit in Chicago, along with the myriad protests that are mounting against it, is impacting local businesses. From Secret Service mandating certain institutions within close proximity to the summit close outright, to possible drone-sightings in the gray skies above the Windy City suburbs, security measures are ramping up.

To this end, the sidewalks surrounding historic McCormick Place, where official summit business is slated to take place, is beginning to look more like Fort Knox as work crews have begun furiously assembling anti-scale fences (also mandated by Secret Service) around the perimeter. NBC Chicago reports that palettes of fencing also turned up near Grant Park.

Now, some of the city's most visually pleasing landmarks are ensconced in metal or plywood. It is difficult to imagine how this, combined with the fact that a number of business are closing down, boarded-up, or simply operating in "contingency mode," reinforces Mayor Rahm Enamel's vow that the "city would remain open for business" during the Summit. "Just as I was riding my bike up here, I was like, 'Here we go. Here come the fences,'" South Loop resident Geomele Moya told NBC. "It makes me feel secure. It makes me feel the city has a plan. And I’m not intimidated by it (the fencing). I feel it’s a real exciting event for the city and they have a good idea of how to make sure things go smoothly." Even salon owners do not feel safe from potential vandalism.

A company that provides plywood, BB Board Up, told the network that they have been "busy" all week boarding up clients' brick and mortar business all around the downtown area.

Aniko Salon and Spa in Chicago's South Loop business district is one of those businesses.

"We chose to shut down in the best interest of the safety of our guest and employees," said owner Sally Fernandez. "Maybe nothing will happen, and that would be terrific, but we just wanted to be cautious."

J.C. Restoration Inc. has also reportedly signed contracts with roughly 40 downtown buildings to board up windows that might prove tempting for protesters to smash.

"The commercial real estate community downtown is definitely fearful of what could happen" client advocate Mike Collins said in the interview.

NBC also reports that across the city, the presence of military and law enforcement can be felt. Thus far, three Air Force helicopters were spotted hovering the Chicago skies on Wednesday, while the U.S. Coast Guard are patrolling the lake to help secure the waters near McCormick Place.

Report: Obama‘s 1991 Literary Agency Described Him as ’Born in Kenya and Raised in Indonesia and Hawaii’

Breitbart.com on Thursday published part of what it says is a 1991 promotional booklet from Barack Obama's then-literary agency, describing the the future president as "born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii." The 36-page Acton & Dystel booklet was reportedly distributed to "'business colleagues' in the publishing industry," according to Breitbart, and includes a short biography of Obama and 89 other authors. Obama's biography features a brief mention of his anticipated first book,  "Journeys in Black and White," which he never completed:

[caption id="attachment_316218" align="aligncenter" width="260" caption="Image source: Breitbart News"][/caption] Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. The son of an American anthropologist and a Kenyan finance minister, he attended Columbia University and worked as a financial journalist and editor for Business International Corporation. He served as project coordinator in Harlem for the New York Public Interest Research Group, and was Executive Director of the Developing Communities Project in Chicago’s South Side. His commitment to social and racial issues will be evident in his first book, Journeys in Black and White.
[caption id="attachment_316219" align="alignright" width="277" caption="Image source: Breitbart News"][/caption] Jay Acton, who no longer represents Obama, told Breitbart News "almost nobody" wrote their own biography for the booklet, though said the non-athletes whom "the agents deal[t] with on a daily basis" were "probably" approached to approve the text. Acton's former partner Jane Dystel still lists Obama as a literary client, but did not respond to Breitbart's requests for comment. The text editor of the booklet, Miriam Goderich, also did not return requests for comment, though booklet designer Richard Bellsey told Breitbart it "sounds like one of our jobs, like I did for [Acton & Dystel] 20 years ago or more." In a "senior management" note, Breitbart.com stated it is "a site that has never advocated the narrative of 'Birtherism.' In fact, Andrew believed, as we do, that President Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on August 4, 1961." The booklet, the post stated, is evidence "not of the President's foreign origin, but that Barack Obama's public persona has perhaps been presented differently at different times." Church Receives Violent Threats After Posting ‘Two Men Are Friends, Not Spouses’ Sign

St. Francis Xavier in Acushnet, Massachusetts, isn't afraid to insert its voice into the contentious gay marriage debate. The church, which posted a controversial sign voicing its disapproval of gay marriage, is reportedly receiving violent threats as a result of it's anti-gay marriage messaging. "Two men are friends, not spouses," read the contentious sign, which was clearly intended to drive home the church's view that marriage is an institution that should be reserved for men and women, exclusively. Monsignor Gerard O'Connor, the head of pastoral services, said that the message was posted to reiterate the Catholic Church's views on the sanctity of marriage. Additionally, he claimed that the original intention was for the church to offer a response to President Barack Obama's recent gay marriage endorsement. "That’s what the church teaches," O’Connor said in an interview with CBS Boston. "We understand people disagree with us, but we do it out of love. We never said we hate anybody." The message, which was intended to capture attention, has certainly grabbed attention. According to staff members at St. Francis Xavier, authorities are keeping a close eye on the house of worship after someone called and threatened to burn it to the ground. After people began coming to the church to protest, officials decided to remove the sign. One woman, Vanessa Perry, is planning a small, peaceful gathering this upcoming Sunday. Perry also posted a sign on a fence in front of the church that reads, "You may not be welcome in the church, but you are in this community. Spread love, not hate,” it said, with a rainbow balloon tied to the fence.   (H/T: CBS Boston)

What Racy Joke Did ABC‘s Jake Tapper Convince Jimmy Kimmel to Drop From His Correspondents’ Dinner Routine?

[caption id="attachment_300475" align="aligncenter" width="619" caption="Comedian Jimmy Kimmel high-fived President Barack Obama after his hosting gig at the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner last month. He recounted one off-color joke to Howard Stern this week that he said ABC's Jake Tapper convinced him not to use. (AP)"][/caption] Jimmy Kimmel's White House Correspondents' Dinner routine last month was fairly uneventful, taking shots at President Barack Obama and the GOP candidates hoping for his job. But speaking with Howard Stern this week, the comedian confided he had one joke that was particularly over the top -- and that it was ABC White House reporter Jake Tapper who convinced him to scrap it. Via JimRomenesko.com:

KIMMEL: I had some jokes about — like Rick Santorum. I said something like — well, I didn’t say it, but: Newt Gingrich’s campaign is so dead Mitt Romney wants to baptize it and Rick Santorum wants to put it in a jar and show it to his kids.
STERN: You didn’t want any abortion jokes? KIMMEL: People went like, uh-oh. I ran it by people who go to this thing. STERN: Who do you run it by? KIMMEL: There’s a guy named Jake Tapper at ABC News, I ran jokes by him. He’s been there a lot of times. There are a few other people — reporters.
The "put it in a jar and show it to his kids" is less a reference to abortion than to the death of Santorum's infant son and how he and his wife brought the baby home after it died. For his part, Tapper confirmed to Yahoo News that he did in fact make some suggestions to the comedian. Kimmel's late-night show "Jimmy Kimmel Live" is broadcast on ABC. "I tried to help Jimmy with the temperature of the room," Tapper wrote in an email. "And yes, I thought that joke would cause the room to turn against him, perhaps even causing a stampede, with the Hilton getting in on the tar and feather concession."

Authorities Criminally Charge Tuberculosis Patient for Not Taking Meds

[caption id="attachment_316116" align="alignright" width="256" caption="Armando Rodriguez was arrested for not taking his medication for infectious tuberculosis. (Photo: AP/San Joaquin County District Attorney's Office)"][/caption] SAN FRANCISCO (The Blaze/AP) -- It's a difficult legal situation. A person has an infectious disease. Taking medication is not only beneficial to them, but it can help stop the spread of said disease. When it's found the patient is not taking these medications, the authorities arrest them and institute a measure that will ensure the patient is at a certain place where administration of the medication can be monitored. This exact situation is what has happened with Armando Rodriguez who has tuberculosis, but some public health officials think the authorities went too far. Rodriguez was warned several times to continue taking his tuberculosis medicine. At one point, authorities said, he told his case officer he stopped the treatment out of concern for his liver while binging on alcohol and methamphetamine. On Tuesday, authorities arresting Rodriguez and charged him with refusing to comply with a tuberculosis order to be at home at certain times and make appointments to take his medication. It's a move that divides public health officials. "I think it's an error to confine someone in the criminal justice system for a public health crime," said Lawrence Gostin, a Georgetown University public health law professor who drafted a model law adopted by several states struggling with the issue. "The whole intention is to protect the public's health. It's not to lay blame on someone." Health officials say Rodriguez, 34, of Stockton has active pulmonary tuberculosis, which can include coughing up blood or phlegm and can spread through the air. Rodriguez has been noncompliant with his treatment and could become contagious as a result, Ginger Wick, nursing director for San Joaquin County, said in a letter requesting a warrant for Rodriguez's arrest. After failing one time to give himself the drugs, Rodriguez told a nurse he had gone on an alcohol binge and taken methamphetamine and didn't want to hurt his liver, Wick said in her letter. Rodriguez was arrested Tuesday and is expected to be arraigned Thursday on two misdemeanor counts. Each charge against Rodriguez carries a maximum penalty of a year behind bars. He will likely be appointed a public defender. [caption id="attachment_316117" align="alignleft" width="216" caption="Scanning electron micrograph of the tuberculosis bacterium. (Image; Wikimedia)"][/caption] Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually attacks the lungs. Many people have a latent form, and the active form usually only affects adults whose immune systems are compromised, which can happen from drug use. Public health experts are divided on the issue of mandatory treatment and criminal charges for patients who don't comply with treatment orders. Many of those who do support criminal prosecution in the rarest of cases when public health is in jeopardy oppose the jailing of patients. Implementing mandatory treatment should be a last resort, and prosecuting someone for disobeying a public health order is unhelpful and sends the wrong message if protecting public health is the intent, Georgetown's Gostin said. Instead, the afflicted should be given assistance such as transportation to and from treatments rather than punishment as an incentive to take their medicine, he said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said laws to control the spread of tuberculosis have been in use for more than a century, though regulations differ in each state. Here's an excerpt from the CDC's TB Policy Handbook:

In other cases, however, it may be necessary for government to significantly restrict individual liberty to protect the public’s health. Under one state’s law, for example, a TB patient may be required to undergo outpatient examination and treatment, DOT, hospitalization, or residential isolation to prevent the spread of the disease. When public health authorities seek to use powers that restrict individual freedoms, fundamental rights of due process, travel, or association may be implicated. In such cases, courts may seek to determine whether government’s action advances a compelling state interest that is narrowly tailored, and there are other less restrictive alternatives available to protect the public’s health and the individual. Generally, liberty principles allow individuals (or their legal guardians) to decide whether to treat an illness, regardless of its severity, consistent with traditional notions of informed consent. The U.S. Supreme Court has recognized a right to bodily integrity that includes a right to refuse medical treatment, except in limited cases (e.g., treatment of prisoners with infectious diseases).
As many as 12,000 new cases of tuberculosis are reported in the country each year, the CDC reported. California recorded 2,317 new cases in 2011, a low since records have been kept. Nonetheless, officials throughout the nation continue to struggle to stop the spread of tuberculosis, with several drug-resistant strains emerging in recent years. Federal and state officials don't keep records of the number of people prosecuted for refusing to take their medicines. But some say it's exceedingly rare to file criminal charges in such cases. San Joaquin County has had more than 30 tuberculosis prosecutions since 1984, prosecutor Stephen Taylor said, noting the county is more aggressive than other jurisdictions in prosecuting patients to get them to take their medication. "The criminal cases we're dealing with generally involve drug users who are harder to treat and manage because the TB medicines conflict with street drugs," he said. "We have to throw these people in jail and treat them as in-patients. They don't cooperate as out-patients." Karen Furst, San Joaquin County public health officer, said the county arranges transportation and other services to help patients stick to their drug regimen and turns to the legal system only as a last resort. "I have to make sure that if I'm aware that somebody is in a position that could possibly be spreading a disease to another person, that I take steps that are necessary to prevent that from happening," she said. Rodriguez was discharged in March from San Joaquin General Hospital with four medications for active tuberculosis and agreed to take the drugs under observation by a county health official on weekdays and on his own on weekends, authorities said. He allegedly refused to take the drugs on another day and then was not at home on three occasions and missed an appointment. In her letter, Wick said Rodriguez would need nine months of treatment. Should authorities be able to criminally charge with the potential for jail time a patient with an infectious disease who refuses to take medication?

Kennedy Jr.'s estranged wife died of asphyxiation due to hanging, the Associated Press reported. Mary Richardson Kennedy was found dead Wednesday on the family's property in Bedford, N.Y. She was 52.
